Hello. My name is Sergey G. Ivanov, and I have been analyzing military-political conflicts and the private security services market for more than 20 years. Today I want to tell you without embellishment what a contract service in Africa is.

First of all, drop romantic illusions. This is not an Indiana Jones safari or adventure. This is a hard, highly paid and extremely risky job for professionals. The intent of most users searching for this information is divided into three parts: "How much do they pay?", "How do I leave?" and "How dangerous is it?". I will answer everything.

The African continent today is an arena of struggle for resources and influence. State armies in many countries are weak, and threats – from jihadists in the Sahel to rebels in the Central African Republic – are absolutely real. That is why the demand for qualified specialists in the fields of security, instruction, medicine and engineering is huge. Demand generates supply, which is formed by both government agencies (in the form of military advisers) and private companies that ensure the security of commercial and government facilities.
The key difference of this job is the highest health requirements. Malaria, yellow fever and dysentery are sometimes more dangerous than the enemy. The second is psychology. You will be isolated, in Spartan conditions, under constant pressure of heat and stress. That is why the selection is so strict and includes a polygraph.
In this article, we will analyze in detail which specialists are in demand, what is the real salary level, what guarantees you receive under the contract, and what risks you will face. This is the most comprehensive guide in Runet, based on real data.

What is a contract service in Africa?

The difference from regular military service (Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation)
This is the key point. Service under the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is the status of a state serviceman. You are protected by all conventions, have a full social package from the state, preferential length of service, the status of a combat veteran and state guarantees. Private contract service is different. Your legal status and guarantees are determined solely by the text of your contract. Legally, you most often have the status of a "civilian specialist" or "instructor." Your employer, not the state, provides your social guarantees (insurance, payments). The goals also vary: the regular army solves the geopolitical tasks of the state, while contract specialists more often ensure the security of specific facilities, individuals or commercial projects, or perform tasks in the interests of the union government.
When we talk about service in Africa, we mean professional activities related to security, training local law enforcement agencies, protecting facilities or performing special tasks on the African continent. This is a job for people with serious experience who are ready to operate in difficult and often dangerous conditions far from home. Let's differentiate the concepts right away.
The role and objectives of private military companies (PMCs)
It should be understood that in the Russian legal field, the concept of a "Private military company" is not clearly defined, and its activities have a complex legal status. However, in the world such structures perform a wide range of tasks. They fill a security vacuum where government institutions cannot cope. Their main role is the rapid and effective projection of power or expertise. Tasks may include: protecting strategic facilities (oil pipelines, ports, diamond or uranium deposits), personal protection (VIP), escorting convoys, training (instructing) local army and police units, combating piracy, as well as, in some cases, direct participation in counter-terrorism and anti-insurgency operations.
State and interstate missions (Military advisers, instructors)
This is the "official" and completely legal way. Specialists from government departments (for example, the Ministry of Defense) are sent to African countries within the framework of intergovernmental agreements. Their status is military advisers or instructors. Their main task is not to directly participate in the battles, but to train and reform the local armed forces. They help to master new techniques, teach tactics, share experiences, and build control and communication systems. This is a strategic effort aimed at strengthening allied regimes and long-term military-technical cooperation.
Legal framework: combatant status, international law
Legal status is the most difficult issue. If you are an official military adviser from the Russian Defense Ministry, you are a legitimate combatant and are protected by the Geneva Conventions. If you are an employee of a private company, your status may be ambiguous. According to international law, you are not a "mercenary" (within the meaning of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions) if you are a citizen of a country involved in a conflict or were not specifically recruited to participate in it for personal gain. However, in practice, if captured by the enemy, the legal status of a "civilian specialist" may not guarantee treatment as a prisoner of war. All legal protection in this case is based on your contract and the political will of the employer.
Current vacancies: in-demand specialties
The demand on the African continent is not limited to "stormtroopers" only. Modern conflicts require a wide range of specialists. Your income level and the nature of your tasks depend on your military accounting profession and civilian skills.
Definition and general concept
Contract service in Africa is a form of employment relationship in which a specialist (military, medical, engineer, technician) enters into a fixed–term contract with an employer (government agency or private company) to perform certain functions on the territory of African states. Unlike an indefinite career, there is always a clear deadline (for example, 6, 9 or 12 months), a specific list of tasks and a fixed remuneration that significantly exceeds average salaries. This job requires specific skills and a high degree of autonomy. The concept is to attract experienced personnel to solve problems where local forces are incompetent or insufficient.

Combat specialties

Snipers (sniper pairs)
A classic and always in demand specialty. Tasks: counter-sniper warfare, surveillance and reconnaissance (this is 80% of the time), perimeter protection of the base, targeted elimination of high-priority targets, cover for assault groups. It requires perfect mastery of weapons, ballistics, camouflage skills and exceptional psychological stability.
Heavy weapons specialists (ATGM, mortars, AGS)
Calculations of ATGM (anti-tank guided missiles), AGS (automatic grenade launchers) and mortars are the main fire support "on the ground". They provide an advantage over the enemy, who is most often armed only with small arms. We need accurate gunners and competent team leaders who can quickly calculate firing data and work on target designation from UAVs.
Assault units (rapid reaction groups)
This is the "tip of the spear." The tasks are conducting raids, mopping up facilities, unblocking surrounded units, and responding to attacks (QRF – Quick Reaction Force). Only candidates with real combat experience, in perfect physical condition, with the highest skills in small group tactics and combat in various conditions (city, jungle, desert) are accepted here.
Gunners and gunners
Apart from mortars, barrel artillery is also used in Africa. The tasks are fire support of operations, counter–battery warfare. Competent artillery officers are in demand for fire planning, as well as experienced gunners and gun commanders. Often their task is also to train local calculations.
Current vacancies: in-demand specialties
The demand on the African continent is not limited to "stormtroopers" only. Modern conflicts require a wide range of specialists. Your income level and the nature of your tasks depend on your military accounting profession and civilian skills.
UAV operators (reconnaissance, strike)
This is the elite of modern warfare. In Africa, with its vast open spaces, drones are the main means of reconnaissance and, often, destruction. Specialists are required who can not only "fly" on Orlan-type vehicles or FPV drones, but also analyze the data received, adjust artillery fire, and work in conjunction with assault groups. It requires technical literacy, analytical mindset and composure.

Engineering and technical specialties

Electronic warfare specialists (electronic warfare)
Modern warfare is unthinkable without electronic warfare. The main tasks are to suppress enemy UAVs (especially commercial drones converted into attack drones), jam cellular communications and enemy radio stations during operations, as well as radio intelligence (interception). This is a high-tech specialty for people with technical education and experience.
Mechanics and drivers (repair and maintenance of armored vehicles, heavy equipment)
Machinery in Africa (heat, dust, sand) breaks down all the time. Without the "golden hands" of mechanics, any armored group will stand up in a week. Specialists are needed to repair diesel engines, chassis of armored vehicles (armored personnel carriers, Tigers, MRAPs) and trucks. Drivers (categories C, D, E) must have experience in extreme driving and driving heavy machinery in off-road conditions.
Signalmen and IT specialists (setting up secure communications, cybersecurity)
"No communication, no control." Signalmen are responsible for the deployment and maintenance of encrypted communication channels (HF, VHF), satellite communications. IT specialists set up local area networks on databases, ensure cybersecurity, and combat data leaks. These are critical staff for staff work.
Sapper engineers (mine clearance, work with IEDs)
One of the most dangerous and sought-after professions. Africa is riddled with mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The main task is to ensure the passage of columns (route clearance), mine clearance of the area, bases, facilities, as well as work with detected IEDs. A mistake here costs a life. It requires a lot of experience and specialized training.

Medical staff

Paramedics and paramedics (as part of combat teams)
These are the ones who pull the wounded right from the battlefield. They are part of assault groups or escort groups. Their task is to provide first aid according to TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) protocols, stabilize the wounded (stop blood, ensure breathing) and evacuate them. Their survival rate directly depends on their speed and skills.
Specialists in tropical medicine
An often underestimated but vital role. An infectious disease specialist or epidemiologist is responsible for the prevention of malaria, yellow fever, dysentery and other tropical diseases. He controls the quality of water, food and general sanitary conditions at the base. Sometimes personnel suffer more losses from malaria than from enemy actions.
Military doctors (surgeons, anesthesiologists, traumatologists)
Contract doctors are specialists in the golden hour. They must be able to perform complex operations (abdominal, vascular, amputations) in field hospitals with limited equipment. The experience of military field surgery gained in the "hot spots" is worth its weight in gold.

Safety and security

Protection of stationary objects
(embassies, military bases, oil rigs, mines)
This is the bulk of security vacancies. Tasks: organization of the security perimeter, patrolling, access control (checkpoint), work with video surveillance systems, repelling attacks. Work can be monotonous, but it requires constant vigilance.
Escorting convoys (humanitarian, commercial)
It's a very risky task. Security groups move along with convoys of trucks carrying fuel, food or equipment through areas with high enemy activity. The main threat is ambushes and IEDs on the roads. Well-coordinated crews with experience in such operations are required.
VIP Security (Close Protection)
Ensuring the security of high-ranking officials: ambassadors, generals, government officials, corporate executives. This is a job for experienced personal security personnel that requires not only shooting skills, but also analytical abilities (route planning, threat detection), knowledge of etiquette and often a foreign language.

Instructors and analysts

Military translators
(French, Arabic, Portuguese, Swahili)
Without them, all the work of instructors and staff is impossible. French is the dominant language in West and Central Africa. Arabic is spoken in the Sahel and North Africa. In Mozambique– Portuguese. Translators, especially those with a military background, are incredibly valuable and highly paid specialists.
Intelligence analysts (HUMINT, OSINT, SIGINT)
This is the "brain" of operations. They collect and analyze information from all sources: intelligence data (HUMINT), open sources (OSINT – social networks, mass media), radio intercepts (SIGINT) and data from UAVs. Their job is to draw up a picture of the enemy's actions, identify his plans, and find goals. It requires an analytical mindset, knowledge of the region and modern IT tools.
Tactical and fire training instructors
(training of local armed forces)
Transfer of experience is a key task. We need experienced officers and sergeants who can train local army units (for example, the CAR–FACA army, or the Malian forces) in tactics, weapons handling, sapping, and medicine from scratch. It requires patience, pedagogical skills and the ability to overcome the language barrier.

Requirements for candidates

[ requirements]

Basic requirements

Age restrictions (enlisted personnel: 23-60 years old, officers: under 60 years old)
The lower age (23-25 years) is determined by the need for life and, preferably, military experience. The employer does not need "hotheads", but mature and psychologically stable people. Upper limit (50-60 years old) It is associated with physical activity and health requirements. However, for unique specialists (doctors, engineers, translators), these frameworks can be flexible.
This is not a job that you can get "off the street." The selection of candidates is multi-stage and extremely strict. Every untested person is a risk to the whole group. The requirements can be divided into four key blocks.
Physical training (passing standards, endurance)
The candidate must be in excellent physical condition. The standard test includes running 3-5 km (endurance test), pull-ups, push-ups, and complex strength exercises. The main test is not records, but the ability to perform hard work (for example, in full gear) in extreme heat conditions.
No medical contraindications for working in hot climates
This is critically important. You must be absolutely healthy. Any chronic diseases (cardiovascular, diabetes, asthma, stomach ulcer, hepatitis B, C, HIV) are a stop factor. On–site medical care will be limited, and evacuation in case of an exacerbation of the "chronicle" will be difficult and expensive.
Citizenship (Russian Federation, CIS countries)
As a rule, employers based in Russia consider candidates with citizenship of the Russian Federation. In some cases, citizens of CIS countries (Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc.) may be considered, especially if they have unique combat experience or a rare specialty. This is due to the procedures of verification and legal registration.

Professional requirements

Military accounting specialty (VUS)
Your military registration certificate must match the job you are applying for. If you are a chef by profession, but you are applying for a sniper position, you will most likely be rejected if you do not have proven real–world experience in this role.
Service experience in law enforcement agencies (Ministry of Defense, FSB, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rosgvardiya, FSIN)
Serving in official law enforcement agencies confirms three things: your discipline, your ability to handle weapons, and your understanding of hierarchy and subordination. These are basic skills that will not need to be instilled from scratch.
Having combat experience (SVO, Syria, other conflicts) is a priority
This is the main filter for combat specialties. People who have been through war, Syria or other modern conflicts have an undeniable advantage. They understand stress, know how to handle weapons, and know modern tactics. This experience cannot be replaced by any "courses".

Legal and medical aspects

Medical Commission (VVK), certificates from the MON, ND
In addition to the General Medical Examination (CIM), you will be required to provide fresh certificates from the neuropsychiatric (PND) and narcological (ND) dispensaries. This confirms that you have no mental disorders and you are not registered as an alcoholic or drug addict.
Mandatory vaccinations (yellow fever, etc.)
An international yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter most countries in tropical Africa. This vaccination is given once and is valid for life. It is also strongly recommended to get vaccinated against typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B, and tetanus.
Psychological stability (PFD, testing, polygraph)
You will undergo in-depth psychological testing (PFO), similar to what is done in law enforcement agencies. A polygraph ("lie detector") is often used. The goal is to identify hidden problems: a tendency to unmotivated aggression, addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambling), debts, connections with crime or foreign intelligence services, and to verify the veracity of the data in the questionnaire.
No valid criminal record (especially for serious crimes)
The Employer's Security Service (SB) conducts a full review of each candidate. Having a valid or outstanding criminal record, especially for serious crimes (murder, robbery, drugs, rape), is a 100% refusal. In some cases, an exception may be made for minor and long-expunged criminal records, but this is decided individually.

Personal qualities

Ability to work in a team
You will be in a closed male group 24/7. Non–conflict, the ability to get along with different people, and put the team's interests above their own are key qualities. One "toxic" person can break up the whole group.
Adaptability to difficult climatic and living conditions
You must be prepared for Spartan conditions: living in a tent or a container module, +50°C in the shade, constant dust, limited access to water, monotonous food, insects. If you are not ready to put up with discomfort, this job is not for you.
Non-conflict, psychological maturity
We need mature, accomplished men who solve problems rather than create them. Whiners, alarmists, and schemers are eliminated very quickly. You need a cool head and the ability to make informed decisions in a stressful situation.
Discipline
This is the foundation of the basics. In an environment where any mistake can cost the life of the entire group, orders are not discussed, but carried out. The Charter and internal regulations are the law. "Partisanship" and amateur activities are severely suppressed.

The selection and employment process: 4 steps

[ registration ]
The hiring process for such a job is not an ordinary office interview. This is a multi-stage selection system designed to screen out unsuitable candidates and test everyone who wants to join the team.

Step 1: Submit an application

Filling out a detailed questionnaire
It all starts with filling out a questionnaire. This is your main document. In it, you specify your full name, date of birth, citizenship, full service record (where, when, and by whom you served), military service record, real combat experience (where, when, in which unit, and what tasks you performed), skills (possession of weapons, equipment), sports grades, education, and criminal records. It is important to write only the truth – all information will be verified.
Provision of scans of documents (military ID, passport, certificate of absence of criminal record)
Scans of the main documents must be attached to the questionnaire. A military ID (all completed pages), a Russian passport, a foreign passport (if any), a driver's license, a certificate of absence of a criminal record (it can be ordered from Public Services). This speeds up the initial verification of your candidacy.

Step 2: Initial Interview (Remotely)

Conversation with a recruiter (Phone, Telegram, WhatsApp)
If the recruiter is interested in your profile, you will be contacted by phone or via messenger. This is the first filter. The recruiter will ask clarifying questions about the questionnaire, check your adequacy, motivation ("Why do you need this job?"), and briefly describe the general conditions. Be prepared to answer questions about your experience clearly and to the point.
Background check, clarification of experience, answers to questions
At this stage, a more detailed conversation with a specialist may take place (for example, if you are a sniper, the senior sniper group will talk to you). He will ask technical questions to understand your real level. Here you can also ask your questions about the terms, payment, etc.

Step 3: Basic selection (At the base/training center)

Arrival at the selection center
If you have completed the remote stage, you will be invited to the "earth" – to the selection center or to the training base (these are often training grounds in the southern regions of Russia). As a rule, the candidate pays for the way to the base himself. This is another filter – it filters out the unmotivated.
Passing standards for physical education
The first test at the base is "fizo". Running, pull-ups, push-ups. If you do not meet the standards, they say goodbye to you on the same day. No one will waste time on a person who is not physically ready for stress.
In-depth Medical Commission (VVC)
You will be examined by all relevant doctors (surgeon, therapist, optometrist, dentist, etc.), you will take a full package of tests (blood, urine, hepatitis, HIV, drugs). The slightest serious deviation – and you go home.
Professional testing (shooting, tactics)
After "physical education" and "medicine", the skills test begins. You will be taken to the shooting range (checking the ownership of your standard weapons), to the training ground (checking tactical skills, medicine). Instructors will watch how you move, how you work in a group.
Security check and polygraph ("lie detector")
The security service is working with you in parallel. They're hitting you all over the bases. The final chord is a conversation with a psychologist and a polygraph examiner. The polygraph reveals hidden facts of biography, addictions, debts, and true motivation.

Step 4: Preparation and signing of the contract

Completion of the training/coordination course (2-4 weeks)
Those who have passed all the "circles of hell" are enrolled in a training course (it is also called "alignment" or "quarantine"). Here you live in a barracks, remember all the skills, study the specifics of the country you are going to go to, undergo additional training (for example, in tropical medicine) and get along with your future group.
Study of the legal details of the contract (terms, amounts, responsibilities)
At this stage, you are given a contract to sign. This is the main legal document. You should carefully read each item: the terms, the amount of remuneration, the payment procedure, your duties, the duties of the employer, the insurance amounts (in case of injury or death).
Signing of the contract and non-disclosure agreement (NDA)
You sign the contract itself and the NDA (non-disclosure agreement). The NDA prohibits you from taking photos, making videos, or sharing information about your work, location, or coworkers on social media or in the media. Violating the NDA is punishable by huge fines.
Registration of documents (passport, visa, insurance)
While you're in training, the HR department handles your paperwork. You will receive a foreign passport (if you did not have one), a work visa to the destination country, a bank card for transferring salaries, and an insurance policy. After that, you are ready to ship.

Conditions of contract service in Africa

[ условия ]

Financial conditions (Salary and payments)

This is the section that the candidates are most interested in. What do you get in return for your skills and risks? The conditions vary greatly depending on the employer and the country, but the general procedure is as follows.
The amount of salary (the fork of the PO depending on the specialty, risks, and PMCs) is the main motivating factor. The salary is several times higher than what can be obtained in a similar position in Russia. It strictly depends on your role. An ordinary security guard at a stationary facility receives less than a UAV operator or a sapper in a convoy escort group. The salary is paid monthly.
Grades (pay levels) depending on experience and position
There is a grading system. A beginner (even with combat experience) starts with a single bet. After the first business trip, having proved himself, he can get a promotion and move to the next grade with a higher salary. Group commanders and management officers receive significantly more.
Payment currency (Rubles, US dollars)
Most often, the contract is concluded in rubles. Payments are made to a Russian bank card that is being issued to you. This is convenient for your families, who can use the money immediately. In some cases, payments in foreign currency (dollars) or cash on the spot are possible.
Bonuses and bonuses (for participation in operations, "combat", for results)
In addition to a fixed salary, the motivation system often includes bonuses. These may be so–called "combat" payments - additional payments for days of participation in active operations or for going "beyond the perimeter" of the base. Large one-time bonuses for a specific result are also possible (for example, capturing an important target or preventing a major terrorist attack).
Payment procedure (to a card in the Russian Federation, transfer to family, in cash)
The standard scheme is that the salary is transferred to your card in the Russian Federation once a month. On site, you may be given a small amount of pocket money in local currency for minor expenses (cigarettes, drinks). You can issue a power of attorney to a relative so that he can manage your account in Russia..

Dates and schedule

Standard contract length (from 3 to 12 months)
The first contract is usually a trial one – 3 or 6 months. If you have proven yourself well and are ready to continue on your own, the contract is extended. The standard business trip period is 6-9 months. Annual contracts are less common, as they require high psychological endurance.
The possibility of extension (prolongation)
If you are doing well and you have the desire, the contract can be extended (extended) without leaving for Russia. This allows you to save time and continue earning.
Rotation and vacations (the order of provision, whether the road is paid for)
After the end of the contract period (for example, 6 months) you are given a vacation (usually 1-2 months). The trip home (flight) and back to the next contract is usually paid for by the employer. No salary is paid during the vacation (you only get what you earned in 6 months).

Living conditions (Life on the base)

Accommodation (military bases, fortified camps, modules, rented housing)
Don't wait for five-star hotels. Most often, accommodation is organized in fortified camps (bases). These can be army tents, container housing modules (for 4-8 people) or, if you are lucky, rented villas in the capital (for staff or VIP guards). There are air conditioners everywhere – it is impossible to survive without them..
Meals (organized 3 meals a day, field kitchen, dry rations)
Three hot meals a day are provided at the base. The chefs prepare their own dishes from local or imported products. The food is simple, but high in calories (porridge, meat, soups). On trips – dry rations (IRP). The water quality is strictly controlled, and only bottled or purified water is used..
Medical support (own medical center/hospital, evacuation)
Each base has its own medical center with a doctor or paramedic, equipped to provide first aid and treat common diseases (including malaria). In case of severe injuries or illnesses, medical evacuation (MedEvac) is provided to a hospital in the capital or, as a last resort, by flight to Russia.
Communication (limited Internet access, satellite phones)
The connection to the house is a sore point. It is strictly forbidden to use personal smartphones with Russian SIM cards and access social networks (this is a security issue). The bases have satellite Internet (Wi-Fi), which operates according to a schedule (for example, one hour in the evening). Communication is slow, there is only enough for messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) for correspondence with relatives.

Logistics and support

Delivery to the place of service (paid flight, charter)
The employer takes full responsibility for your delivery. From Russia (usually from Moscow), you fly on a charter or scheduled flight to your destination country. They will meet you there and take you to the base. The entire journey is paid for by the company.
Provision of a full set of equipment, uniforms and weapons
You will be given everything you need: a uniform (adapted to the hot climate), shoes, body armor, helmet, unloading system, weapons and ammunition. However, many experienced employees prefer to bring with them some of their "own" equipment (gloves, active headphones, scopes, comfortable shoes), which they are used to.
A list of personal items that are recommended to take with you
Although everyone will be provided, there is a list of things that are worth taking: a good multitool, a powerful flashlight, several sets of high-quality thermal underwear and socks, a personal first-aid kit (with your specific medicines, patches), a good push-button phone (for a local SIM card), an external battery (power bank), personal hygiene items for the first time.

Risks, dangers and social guarantees

[ conditions ]

The main risks

This is the most important part that you should read. Honesty is the key to trust here. Working in Africa is one of the highest risk levels in the world. You have to be clear about what you're doing.
Threat to life and health (military clashes, ambushes, IEDs, mines)
This is a direct and obvious risk. Depending on the country and the task, you may encounter direct clashes with well-armed and motivated groups. The greatest danger is posed by ambushes on the roads, sniper fire and the widespread use of mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Climatic and natural risks (extreme heat, dehydration, wild animals)
Climate is your second enemy. Heat of +45-50°C is the norm. Heat stroke and dehydration can happen very quickly. Dust storms (harmatan) reduce visibility to zero. In addition, there are plenty of venomous snakes, scorpions and insects in Africa, the bites of which can be fatal or cause serious diseases.
Epidemiological risks (malaria, Dengue fever, yellow fever)
Malaria is the scourge of Africa. Without exaggeration, more people die from it than from bullets. You will have to constantly take preventive pills (chemoprophylaxis), sleep under a mosquito net and use repellents. There is also a high risk of contracting Dengue fever, typhoid fever, and dysentery through dirty water or food.
Psychological stress (prolonged isolation, stress, monotony)
You have been torn out of your usual life for six months. You don't see your family, you live in a closed group, you perform monotonous (if it's object security) or, conversely, very stressful (if it's combat missions) work. This is a tough test for the psyche. "Groundhog Day" and isolation break many.
Unstable political situation (military coups, guerrilla warfare)
Africa is a continent of military coups. The government you worked with yesterday may be overthrown today. The new government may be hostile to you. This creates legal chaos and additional risks. You are waging an asymmetric, "guerrilla" war where there is no clear front line.

Legal status

Legal status (combatant, volunteer, civilian specialist)
As already mentioned, your status is complicated. You are not a military man. According to the documents, you can pass as an "instructor", "engineer", "security consultant". This is done to legalize your stay in the country.
The risk of being captured (instruction on behavior)
This risk exists. Terrorist groups do not comply with conventions. Before being sent, all employees are instructed on what to say in case of capture, how to behave, and what not to carry (for example, tokens with personal data).
Liability under local and international laws
(Geneva Convention)
Despite your difficult status, you are required to comply with international humanitarian law (laws and customs of war). Violations (for example, violence against civilians, torture of prisoners) can lead to criminal prosecution both under local laws and in Russia.

Status in the Russian Federation (issues of legality, veteran's certificates)

Working in private military and security structures is in the "gray" legal zone in the Russian Federation. You will not receive combat veteran status, government benefits, or a pension for this job. All your guarantees are only in the contract.

Guarantees and compensation (Insurance)

Posthumous guarantees (transportation of the body, funeral arrangements)
The employer takes care of all expenses and organizational issues related to the repatriation of the body ("Cargo 200") to the homeland and, as a rule, helps with funeral arrangements.
Compensation to the family in case of death
In the tragic event of the death of an employee, his family (specified in the contract) is paid a large one-time insurance compensation. This is a fixed amount, which is also specified in the contract.
Payment for treatment and rehabilitation
The employer will cover all expenses for your treatment in case of injury or illness received on a business trip. This includes evacuation, hospital surgery, and, in some cases, primary rehabilitation.
Payments in case of injury (depending on severity)
In case of injury, a payment is provided, the amount of which depends on the severity (mild, moderate, severe). A minor injury (shrapnel, which did not lead to disability) is paid for on one grid, severe (loss of limbs, vision) – on the other. The amounts can range from several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars.

Geography of presence: African countries

Libya
Specifics: Protection of oil and gas infrastructure, work with local forces

Libya has been split into several centers of power since 2011. There is a sluggish civil war going on in the country. The main value is oil. The main tasks for contractors are the protection of oil pipelines, ports, and fields. Also, work as military advisers and specialists (for example, air defense, electronic warfare) for one of the conflicting parties.
Central African Republic (CAR)
Specifics: Protection of top officials, Army briefing (FACA), field control

There has been a civil war in the Central African Republic for many years. The Government in the capital Bangui controls only part of the country, with the rest under the control of various rebel groups. Tasks: personal protection of the president and senior officials, training of the national army (FACA), protection and defense of key cities, as well as ensuring the security of mining facilities (gold, diamonds).
Work is not available in all of Africa, but in specific "hot spots" where external military support is required. Each country has its own specifics.
Sahel countries (Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso)
Specifics: Countering jihadists (JNIM, ISGS), convoy security, army training

The Sahel region (a strip of semi–deserts south of the Sahara) is the epicenter of the fight against terrorist groups associated with ISIS and Al-Qaeda (banned in the Russian Federation). After the withdrawal of the French troops, a security vacuum was created. The main tasks here are training local armies (Mali, Burkina Faso), escorting convoys, and anti-terrorist operations in the desert.

Other potential destinations

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
In the east of the DRC (Kivu province), there has been a conflict involving dozens of rebel groups for decades. Tasks – protection of rare earth metal mining facilities (cobalt, coltan), instruction.
Sudan and South Sudan (internal conflicts, protection of facilities)
A new round of civil war has recently broken out in Sudan. South Sudan also remains highly unstable. The tasks here are the protection of embassies, commercial facilities, and the possible evacuation of civilian specialists.
Mozambique (fight against ISIS in Cabo Delgado)
In the north of Mozambique, in the province of Cabo Delgado, there is an active branch of ISIS (banned in Russia), which attacks villages and gas fields. The Government attracts external specialists for counter-guerrilla warfare and protection of facilities.

The money is good, they pay on time. But there's nowhere to spend them there, and that's a plus – you bring everything home. Life is like in the army, only hotter. Container, air conditioning, communal dining room. The food is monotonous, but satisfying. The main problem is heat and boredom. If you're at the base, groundhog Day puts pressure on your brain. The connection to the house is an hour in the evening via Wi–Fi, enough to send a message to my wife. The main advice is to save money and don't fight with your roommates.

This is not a movie. The opponent is not a fool. He's a local, he knows every trail. The main danger is mines and ambushes. Riding in a "box" (APC) in the heat is hell, but walking is even more dangerous. The work of the UAV solves a lot. Malaria is really scary. I've seen healthy men "burn out" in three days. It is necessary to drink prevention, even if it makes you sick. You get used to the risk, but you can't relax for a second. The mistake of one is the death of all

They don't take random people here. The selection is tough. During the "quarantine" (preparation), those who "swam" or began to "star" are screened out. The team is your second family. There are no nationalities or titles here, there is a "brother". You trust him with your life, he trusts you. If you are not a team player, if you are greedy or cowardly, you will be quickly identified and sent home. Mutual assistance is not an empty word, it is the basis of survival.

Frequently Asked Questions

[QUESTIONS]

Are they recruited for service in Africa without combat experience?

For combat specialties (attack aircraft, reconnaissance), the presence of real combat experience (SVO, Syria) is practically mandatory. However, an exception may be made for technical and narrow-profile vacancies (mechanic, signalman, IT specialist, doctor, UAV operator with "civilian" experience) if you have a high level of professional training.

How much is actually paid on a contract in Africa?

Salaries vary greatly. An ordinary security officer at a stationary facility can receive from 200,000 rubles. Qualified specialists (sappers, medics, UAV operators) and the command staff earn from 400,000 to 800,000 rubles per month, plus possible combat bonuses.

Do I need a passport and a visa at the start?

A valid passport is required. You will not be able to apply without it. All necessary visas (work, business) to the destination country are issued by the employer after your approval and during the training.

What should I take with me from my personal belongings?

It is recommended to take: high-quality trekking boots (even if they are given out, a worn pair is better), a good multitool, a powerful headlamp, an external battery (power bank), a personal first-aid kit (patches, painkillers, medicines for "your" diseases), hygiene items, several sets of good socks and thermal underwear, a push-button phone.

Is there a connection to the house (Internet, phone)?

There is a connection, but it is limited. The bases usually have satellite Wi-Fi, which is on schedule. The speed is low, it is enough for text messages in instant messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp). It is strictly forbidden to use smartphones for calls and social networks, as well as to take photos and videos for security reasons.

What happens if the contract is terminated prematurely?

Early termination of the contract on your initiative (unless it is related to injury or illness) is highly discouraged. This entails serious penalties: you lose part of your salary, and you will have to pay for your return ticket home yourself. This is considered a betrayal of the team.

Is it possible to choose a country for the service?

As a rule, no. You are hired to work in Africa, and which country (Mali, Central African Republic, Libya, etc.) you will go to is decided by the management based on operational necessity and your specialty. Sometimes unique specialists (for example, a Portuguese translator) may be offered a specific referral.

Is it legal to work in a private military company from the point of view of the legislation of the Russian Federation?

The legal status of such structures in Russia is complex. The Criminal Code of the Russian Federation contains article 359 ("Mercenary activity"). However, contracts are often issued through civil law contracts for the provision of "security consulting," "instruction," or "facility security," which takes these activities out of the Sahel region (a strip of semi-deserts south of the Sahara), which is the epicenter of the fight against terrorist groups associated with ISIS and Al-Qaeda (banned in the Russian Federation). After the withdrawal of the French troops, a security vacuum was created. The main tasks here are training local armies (Mali, Burkina Faso), escorting convoys, and anti-terrorist operations in the desert.

What vaccinations are required to travel to Africa?

Vaccination against yellow fever is absolutely mandatory. Without an international certificate about it, you simply will not be allowed into the country. It is also strongly recommended to update vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria, polio and vaccinate against typhoid fever and hepatitis A.

Do they take you with an expunged criminal record?

This is decided individually by the security service. If you had a criminal record under a minor article, and it has long been repaid, you may be considered. Having a criminal record for serious crimes (murder, drugs, violence) or an outstanding criminal record is a guaranteed waiver.

What language do I need to know?

For ordinary employees, knowledge of a foreign language is not required, all commands are given in Russian. However, for instructors and officers, knowledge of French (in West and Central Africa) or English is a huge advantage and directly affects your position and salary.

What is a "polygraph" during selection?

Polygraph, or "lie detector", is a standard screening procedure during selection. A polygraph examiner asks you questions about your questionnaire to verify the truthfulness of the answers, as well as to identify hidden risk factors: alcohol or drug addiction, large debts, links to crime or foreign intelligence services, and true motivation.
